migraine, music & dad...

I spent much of the day yesterday nursing a migraine...

by 8pm last night, i was feeling a little better & thought i would venture into my blue room...

At this point, i knew this one was not meant to be a happy face... :-)

So i just let it go where it wanted to go.

...and in the end, it's not so bad.
It kinda gives a face to the word MIGRAINE, doesn't it?
I just hope i don't look like this when i get them. :-)
On another note, I want to share a little story about my father.
My father was a carpenter. A good one. A respected one.
He's been officially retired for several years,
although he's kept himself busy with odd jobs here & there.
Then a year ago, he had a severe heart attack, and needed open heart surgery.
He could no longer do the things he used to do.
He needed to scale down, big time.
It took a while to adjust, but eventually he did, and within months of being back home
he made this...

A birdhouse / bird feeder.
Dad doesn't do anything half assed.
These little birdhouses reminded me that even when life changes drastically,
and so many things are taken away from you,
the need for creative expression remains.
The need to have purpose. The need to feel useful.
And for a carpenter like my father,
the profound need to do something with his hands. To make something.
I think i understand
where i get my art heart. :-)

Where do you get your art heart?

  1. Wow--that birdhouse is gorgeous! I love how he's transferred his skills and creativity to building homes of another sort. Lucky birds.

  3. now THAT birdhouse is totally righteous! yowza :) The face you painted is a great illustraction of 'migraine', and the eyes say it all. I have to keep an eye out for old music books. I like how your pages come out with the music in the b/g

  7. You're a prolific sketcher. I tend to enjoy looking at other artists' sketches, except mine.

  8. How did I miss this post?? Sorry to hear about your migraine. I can empathize. Here's my interpretation of a silent headache. Thanks for sharing the story of your Dad and his beautiful bird house. My art heart has been passed down through at least four generations of women :).
    Stay inspired!

  9. A perfect rendition of what a migraine would look/feel like. I suffer with them too so you have my empathy.

A lovely story about your Dad and his need to create. His birdhouse is a beauty!

To be honest, I'm not sure where my art heart came from in the family as I don't know of any who were creative in the art area. My Aunt has always been an amazing seamstress, my Dad's father was a tailor and I did sew clothes for me, my kids and the rest of my family for many years. Then, one day, art found its way into my life by complete accident, quite literally, and my sewing took a back seat from thereon. That said, I do remember I loved drawing a lot when I was a child so maybe I always had it in me.

  11. This is such a beautiful post. Firstly I'm so sorry to hear you suffer with migranes, I have regular attacks and believe yes we do sometimes look like that, but cest le vie I just avoid mirrors lol your page conveys it perfectly (thanks for showing all the layers too, I love watching your work progress). That bird feeder is so beautiful, stunning in itself but also what it means, you're very lucky to have a Dad like that, which I'm sure you know. I get my art heart from my mother's side, all women and all of us creatives in our separate areas, much love Jennibellie xx
