contradictions and complexities...

To create one's world in any of the arts
takes courage.
- Georgia O'Keefe

We are told
that success doesn't matter
and then we are given
the seven keys to success.

Magazines have articles that tell us
that real beauty is found within,
and photoshopped women
in high heels and fake boobs
adorn their pages.

We are told
to follow our own paths
and then given directions
by someone else
to get there.

We are torn between
meditation and
medication,
between getting up
or staying in bed,
between the glass half full
or half empty,
and on certain days,
no glass at all.

We are misguided
and misunderstood.

We are led by blind leaders
who believe that
bombs are the way
to a peaceful planet
and that their way
is the only way.

Petty thieves
go to prison
and wall street criminals
walk the streets
in their sparkly suits.

Is it any wonder
so many of us have lost our way?

Is it any wonder
so many of us
spend our lives
trying to be someone else?

Trying to have what he has?

We no longer hear
our own voices,
in the cacophony of other voices
so much louder than our own,
so much shinier than our own
so much stronger than our own.

We no longer trust
our own path
our own experience
our own perception.

And yet, i believe there is hope.
There is hope
because each of us
still has a voice.

Each of us still has a heart.

There is hope,
because as long as we have
a heart
and the ability to quiet ourselves
long enough to listen,
long enough to feel,
long enough to trust
in our own voices again -
the tide will turn.

That's why art matters.

Because art is the voice of your heart
and your heart always has something to say.
Have the courage to let it speak its truth.

a place in my heart for Syd Barrett and horny drawings

hello peeps!

Had a great evening of drawing last night,
and painting
and even watched a movie.

This is micron pen and watercolor on paper...

she is not impressed...

and he's just a little horned up... ;-)

(i love the quote.)

 (acrylic on canvas)
After a few little drawings, i decided to paint.

I have a soft spot in my heart for Syd Barrett
the founding member of the band, Pink Floyd.

It was 40 years ago this week
that they recorded "Dark Side of the Moon",
one of the best selling albums of all time.

I posted about Syd here
if you want to know a bit more about him.

I purposely used sick looking colors for his face.

After i added this green background,
it just didn't feel done.

It didn't feel right to me.

It all looked too perfect.

Too unlike Syd.

So i added these pink paint drippings
and i liked it much more.

(i was gonna add purple and then remembered PINK FLOYD)... :-)

Sometimes, we get to a certain place with our art,
and we don't always dare to do certain things.

We should dare more.

What's the worst that can happen?

In the end,
it's not about whether someone else likes it or not.

It's about how you feel about that person,
that place,
that thing.

It's about your own perception.

Picasso used to say that he didn't paint the tree itself,
but rather, he painted how he saw the tree.

This is how I see Syd Barrett.
I love this portrait now
because I feel it is more representative of him.

And who knows? Maybe Syd would love it too.

a bit of this and that - and music in the mix...

hello people.
Happy Friday!

(watercolor on paper)

I hesitate to post this because
i made poor John Coltrane look so angry...

The art we make is often a reflection
of how we're feeling at the time.

Obviously, a few nights ago,
i was not in my happy place. :-)

The photo i used...

I love how John Coltrane felt that music was a form of meditation.
Music is a big part of the creative process for me.

 (sharpie markers on photo paper)

This is what i'm playing with today.

Much happier, yes?

Confusing, but happier. :-)
Looks like something my son would have drawn
when he was about 5 years old.

Picasso once said:
Every child is an artist.
The problem is how to remain an artist
once we grow up.

So i make it a point to draw whatever the hell i feel like drawing.

Sometimes it looks good, sometimes not.
But the point is: IT'S A DRAWING.

Truth bomb: Art is as important to me as the air i breathe.

And here's what i'm listening to today...
Hope it brings a smile to all your lovely faces. :-)
